Carley and Adam | Pen Ryn Mansion Wedding

When I first worked with Carley and Adam on their springtime engagement shoot, I was already looking forward to the wedding.  Not only is the couple seriously photogenic and super nice, but they chose a dream team of vendors with whom I always enjoy working.  Who knew that I’d be working with quite a few more of my friends by the end of that wedding day …

I arrived at Pen Ryn two hours early to scout out some new and interesting spots for portraits.  I had been to that venue before, but was excited by some of the new locations I had found.  I met up with the bride as scheduled and began working on some details shots while Carley was getting dressed.  And that’s when it happened — I fell and broke not only my right ankle, but my right foot as well.  While the injury couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time — during the lead-up to a client’s wedding — I couldn’t have been in better company.  Not only are Carley and Adam both doctors, but their parents include three doctors and a nurse.  I knew I was in good hands.  We wrapped up my foot and I kept shooting.

My great friend Pete Malone was on hand as the videographer, and in addition to carrying his equipment and capturing Carley and Adam’s day, he carried me — piggyback style — from location to location so that I could work with my second shooter Mike Landis to photograph the couple’s reveal and portraits.  Talk about a videographer that goes above and beyond!

In the meantime, within about a half hour of my injury, Joy Moody arrived with equipment in hand (straight from the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship in Manayunk where she had been enjoying a well deserved day off) to help with the shoot.  Wedding planner Erin Proud’s assistant Lisa was on the phone during this time as well calling some of my other photographer colleagues.  When all was said and done, we probably had about five photographers ready to show up to help (hey there, brides — don’t be getting any ideas about sneakily sawing the legs off of chairs or anything like that to have a slew of photographers ready to rush your wedding :)).  Ultimately, it was Ryan Estes who graciously came to fill in for me.  While I stayed at the wedding to make sure everything went as planned, Ryan and Mike took care of the legwork necessary to get the rest of the shots from the day.

I knew I had amassed a great network of colleagues and friends over the years, but I don’t think you can truly know how lucky you are until you’re in a bind and droves of people are there and ready to help you out.  I am so thankful to be a part of such a great group and am forever indebted to all of those that came to my aid.  Thanks guys!

And not to leave out all of the others that helped make the day, here is a listing of Carley and Adam’s vendors:

Flor and Jared | Rittenhouse Hotel Wedding

Flor and Jared picked what turned out to be a very busy weekend in Philadelphia for their wedding.  They shared their weekend with the 18th Street Outdoor Cafe event in Rittenhouse Square, the Independence Dragon Boat Regatta and the Philadelphia International Cycling Championship (which happened the next day, but roads were closed in anticipation) — and that’s just what I saw on my unusually long drive in.

Even though so much was going on throughout the city, the scene in the Rittenhouse Hotel (where the couple’s ceremony and reception both took place) was all about Flor and Jared.  The day was particularly special and unique because of the Jewish traditions they worked into their event.  Despite having been at many Jewish weddings over the years, this is the first time I’ve seen a Kabbalat Panim.  This is when the bride and the groom greet their guests separately in individual pre-ceremony receptions.  During this time their attendants, families, and guests wish them well prior to the Badeken (where the groom veils the bride) and then they all head off to the wedding ceremony.  The most exciting part is that a trumpeter first leads the groom to the Badeken and then the bride and groom to the wedding.  It’s very celebratory and I enjoyed seeing it in action.

Coming up in November I’m honored to get to meet up with this family again to shoot what promises to be another spectacular wedding.  That’s when Flor’s sister Sharon will be tying the knot with her fiancé Alex — looking forward to it!

Thanks to second shooter Kevin for joining me once again.  He got a great action shot over the bride’s shoulder during the Hora.  It’s one of my faves from the wedding — check it out below.

Abigail - wow. these are a.w.e.s.o.m.e. I LOVE the last one, so cute! and the picture with the Vail over their faces are wonderful. great work!

May ended with the  gorgeous wedding of Ruthie and Brian.  I love working with a great team and that is just what we had on this sunny warm day.  They had an outdoor wedding with breath taking views followed by a rip roaring reception, complete with twelve piece band.  The ballroom looked stunning thanks in part to Erin Proud and her team at Proud to Plan.  What a great day!  I want to thank kevin York for once again coming out to second shoot with me.  Your work is always amazing!!

Megan and Brendan | Penn State Wedding

Just this past weekend I shot a wedding in Happy Valley for two Penn State alumni, Megan and Brendan.  Penn State was the perfect choice as a location for this couple’s big day as it seemed like most of their guests hailed from the university at one time or another as well.

I first worked with the couple last fall for their engagement session.  I immediately liked the pair (Megan is such a sweet lady!) and have been looking forward to their wedding ever since.  I also wanted to point out that Megan and Brendan’s wedding party was the largest I have ever worked with — 22 adults and 10 kids (the couple included all of their nieces in the wedding) plus the bride and groom.  Luckily, a nice large set of steps around the side of Old Main was big enough to accommodate the group (the adult portion, anyway).

The wedding ceremony was held at the Pasquerilla Spiritual Center right on campus, with a reception following nearby at the Nittany Lion InnBirdhouse Productions captured the day on video, Avant Garden was the florist, and Signature DJ’s kept the party going with great music.
